Crows Show Surprising Geometric Abilities, Challenging Human-Centric View of Cognition

The study opens up the possibility that other animals may share similar geometric skills

Researchers have discovered that carrion crows possess the ability to recognize geometric shapes and patterns, challenging the long-held belief that such cognitive skills are unique to humans. The study, conducted by the University of Tübingen, sheds light on the surprising intelligence of these birds and their ability to perceive structure in a way similar to humans.

The researchers presented the crows with a series of shape-based challenges, using a touchscreen to test their ability to identify an “odd shape out” among a set of geometric figures. Initially, the birds were presented with simple tasks, like recognizing a star among other similar shapes. But as the study progressed, the complexity increased, involving quadrilaterals with subtle geometric differences, such as shifted angles or unequal sides.

Despite having no prior exposure to these specific shapes, the crows performed impressively well, with one bird correctly identifying the odd shape in 50% of trials, far above the expected random guessing rate. The crows’ accuracy did not depend on familiarity with the shapes, and they consistently identified geometric irregularities, such as parallel lines or right angles, showing an inherent understanding of geometric principles.

The study’s lead researcher, Andreas Nieder, emphasized that this discovery challenges the idea that geometric intuition is a uniquely human trait. “Claiming that it is specific to us humans, that only humans can detect geometric regularity, is now falsified,” he said, citing the crows’ abilities.

While humans typically learn about geometric regularity through education, crows appear to recognize structure instinctively, even without formal training. The research not only highlights the impressive problem-solving abilities of these birds but also raises intriguing questions about the evolutionary origins of geometric perception.

This finding adds to growing evidence that intelligence and complex cognitive abilities may not be as confined to humans and our closest relatives as once thought. It suggests that many animals, including crows, may possess sophisticated mental capabilities rooted deeply in evolutionary biology.

The study, published in Science Advances, also opens up the possibility that other animals may share similar geometric skills, prompting further research into how different species process shapes and patterns.
