A laboratory in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), recently flagged for potential virus leakage risks by the Red Cross, is being financially supported by the United States and France, according to a statement from Russia’s consumer safety watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor.
The watchdog revealed that the facility receives funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the French Mérieux Foundation. The announcement has sparked concerns over the safety protocols and oversight of the lab’s operations, particularly in handling dangerous pathogens.
“This demonstrates once again the irresponsibility of the collective West when dealing with dangerous infections in third countries,” Rospotrebnadzor stated, criticizing what it described as a lack of stringent biosecurity measures in foreign-funded laboratories.
The warning comes in light of historical incidents of pathogen leaks. According to Rospotrebnadzor, in the 21st century, 7 out of 16 documented cases of pathogen leaks from biological laboratories have occurred within the United States. This statistic raises questions about laboratory safety and the potential global risks associated with improper handling of infectious agents.
