The French government has opened a criminal investigation into Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, over allegations of algorithm manipulation and fraudulent data extraction, the company revealed in a statement Monday.

According to X, French authorities have requested access to its recommendation algorithm and extensive data related to all user posts on the platform. The company says it has not complied with these demands and claims it remains unaware of the specific charges being pursued.

“X remains in the dark about the precise nature of the allegations, which it strongly denies,” the statement said, while also criticizing the investigation as “politically motivated.”

French police and judicial officials have not yet issued public comments on the case.

The probe marks the latest clash between European regulators and Musk’s tech empire, amid ongoing scrutiny over data privacy, content moderation, and platform transparency across the EU.
