Maithri Wickremesinghe Summoned in Financial Probe Against Former President

Former Sri Lankan first lady to give statement as investigation into Ranil Wickremesinghe’s alleged fund misuse continues

Maithri Wickremesinghe, wife of former Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been summoned to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department on February 20, the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court was informed on February 18. The summons is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct during Ranil Wickremesinghe’s presidency.

Authorities have indicated that Maithri Wickremesinghe’s testimony is being sought in connection with the probe into her husband’s alleged misuse of state funds. The investigation reportedly focuses on expenditures and approvals related to private trips and other personal engagements that may have involved public money. Officials emphasized that recording her statement is a procedural step in gathering evidence to clarify the extent of the alleged irregularities.

In a related development, Saman Ekanayake visit by then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe to the United Kingdom in 2023, was released on bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today.
