Commercial space companies are advancing rapidly in monitoring Earth’s environment, but scientists caution that private missions cannot replace government-operated satellites. A recent commentary in Nature argues that both public and commercial efforts must work in tandem to provide the comprehensive, reliable data needed to understand and protect the planet.
Firms such as GHGSat in Canada, Planet in California, Spire in San Francisco, and Airbus in Europe are already making major contributions. They track methane leaks, monitor land use, analyze ocean conditions, and map sea ice. Space agencies, including NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), have begun incorporating this commercial data into their research portfolios.
Yet, researchers stress that private-sector satellites, while innovative, cannot fully meet global needs. Unlike government-led missions, commercial satellites generally collect data driven by customer demand and market opportunities. Public missions, by contrast, are designed to answer scientific questions, support public services like weather forecasting and disaster response, and ensure global accessibility to high-quality, validated data.
One example is the LandSat programme, jointly run by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, which has provided an uninterrupted record of land-use changes worldwide since 1972. These long-term datasets, regularly calibrated and reprocessed, set benchmarks for commercial missions and ensure continuity for climate and environmental research.
Concerns about the future of NASA’s Earth-observing portfolio remain. Previous U.S. budget proposals — including one under former President Donald Trump — sought to cancel funding for several NASA-operated environmental satellites. Researchers argue that cutting such missions would undermine the very baseline data that makes commercial innovation possible.
“The progress of commercial satellite operators does not mean NASA should scale back,” the Nature commentary emphasizes. Instead, governments must continue to invest in public-sector missions while encouraging private-sector agility and technological growth.
Together, public and private satellites are already shaping policies to combat deforestation, track illegal mining, limit coastal erosion, and manage invasive species. But experts warn that only governments can guarantee the long-term, transparent, and globally accessible data needed to confront climate change and safeguard the environment.
