A large fragment of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket made an unexpected and uncontrolled re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, crash-landing onto a man’s lawn in Poland, the country’s space agency confirmed on Wednesday. The debris, measuring approximately 1.5 meters by 1 meter, is suspected to have come from a SpaceX mission launched on February 1 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
According to Financial Times, the Polish Space Agency (Polsa) stated that the re-entry occurred between 4:46 and 4:48 AM on February 19, 2025, over Polish territory. The object, which reportedly resembled a fuel tank, landed outside a warehouse belonging to Adam Borucki in the village of Komorniki.
Local authorities have since secured the area to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. “We are securing the scene and working to determine how this object ended up here,” Polish police told the national news agency. Another identical container was discovered about 30 kilometers away in a forest near Wiry Village.
The re-entry of the rocket fragment was witnessed by many across Poland, with residents reporting bright flashes in the sky. Videos circulating on social media captured luminous trails streaking across the night sky as the debris burned through the atmosphere.
Harvard astronomer and space observer Jonathan McDowell explained that the Falcon 9’s second stage, which carried a payload of Starlink satellites, had failed to deorbit itself as planned. He tracked the re-entry path over Northern Europe, noting that it passed over the Irish Sea before reaching Poland and Ukraine.
While no injuries have been reported, the incident raises fresh concerns about the risks posed by space debris falling back to Earth. A study last year warned that uncontrolled rocket re-entries could pose an increasing hazard to both people and aircraft.
Similar incidents have occurred before. In 2021, NASA criticized China for its “irresponsible” approach to space safety after debris from one of its rockets fell to Earth. Just last year, a large metal ring, believed to be from another rocket, crash-landed in Kenya’s Mukuku village.
SpaceX has yet to comment on the incident, but Polish authorities are coordinating with the company to verify the origin of the debris. The findings could have implications for global space policy as discussions around space debris management and accountability continue to gain momentum.
