China has reportedly entered mass production of a groundbreaking radar detection system that could undermine one of America’s key military advantages — the stealth capabilities of its F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II fighter jets. According to the South China Morning Post, Chinese scientists have developed the world’s first ultra-low noise, four-channel single-photon detector capable of tracking stealth aircraft, marking a major milestone in quantum radar technology.
The new device, described as an ultra-sensitive “photon catcher,” was developed by the Quantum Information Engineering Technology Research Center. Its design enables it to detect individual photons — the smallest measurable units of light — allowing it to sense the faintest traces of stealth aircraft that typically evade conventional radar systems. By employing four simultaneous wavelength channels, the detector can scan multiple frequencies at once, dramatically enhancing detection accuracy and reducing false readings.
Quantum radar, which relies on the principles of quantum mechanics rather than traditional electromagnetic reflection, has long been seen as a potential game-changer in modern air defense. The ability to detect aircraft that are invisible to standard radar would fundamentally challenge decades of U.S. investment in stealth technology and alter the strategic balance between the world’s two leading military powers.
China showcased several of its latest radar systems at a major defense expo earlier this year, underscoring the breadth of its anti-stealth program. The JY-27V high-mobility meter-wave air surveillance radar, developed by the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), was among the highlights. Also on display was the YLC-8E, an ultra-high-frequency radar capable of providing long-range early warning against stealth targets. CETC further unveiled an “intelligent information hub” designed to integrate radar data across land, sea, air, space, electromagnetic, and cyber domains — forming the digital backbone of a fully networked combat system, according to Global Times.
The JY-27V, in particular, has drawn attention from U.S. defense circles. The National Security Journal warned that its capabilities could allow China to track American stealth fighters like the F-22 and F-35, which have long served as the centerpiece of U.S. air superiority. If accurate, the technology would represent one of the most serious challenges yet to America’s stealth doctrine, which relies on radar evasion as a core tactical advantage.
China’s anti-stealth ambitions are not new. At the 2016 Zhuhai Airshow, CETC first demonstrated an array of advanced detection systems including the YLC-8B, SLC-7, and JY-27A radars — each designed to counter different aspects of stealth aircraft performance. Since then, Beijing has invested heavily in radar research, quantum physics, and integrated defense networks to ensure what Chinese analysts describe as “no sanctuary in the sky” for foreign stealth fighters.
The rapid evolution of these technologies suggests that China is closing the gap in one of the most secretive and strategically important areas of military competition. If its quantum radar and multi-spectrum systems perform as claimed, the era of stealth dominance — once the defining hallmark of U.S. airpower — may be approaching its end.
