Experts investigating Sunday’s catastrophic derailment of a high-speed train in southern Spain have identified a broken joint in the railway tracks as a critical factor in an accident that killed at least 39 people, according to a source briefed on the initial findings. The revelations, reported by Reuters, point to a structural fault that may have developed over time, raising urgent questions about rail inspections and infrastructure safety on one of the country’s modernized lines.
The crash occurred near the town of Adamuz in the province of Cordoba, around 360 kilometers south of Madrid. Several carriages of a high-speed passenger train derailed and smashed into an oncoming train, forcing it off the tracks and down an embankment. The violent impact marked one of the most severe train disasters in Europe in modern times and prompted a swift response from emergency services and senior government officials.
According to the source cited by Reuters, technicians examining the site found wear and damage on a joint between two rail sections, known as a fishplate. The defect created a gap in the rails that gradually widened as trains continued to pass over it.
