China has set a new world record in magnetic levitation technology after successfully accelerating an experimental superconducting maglev to 700 kilometers per hour in just two seconds, marking the fastest performance ever achieved by a superconductive maglev system.
The record-breaking test was carried out by a research team from the National University of Defense Technology on a 400-meter experimental track. During the trial, the maglev vehicle, carrying a load weighing roughly one ton, rapidly reached its peak speed before being brought to a controlled and safe stop, demonstrating both extreme acceleration and operational stability.
Researchers said the achievement represents a major leap in high-speed ground transportation, particularly in the field of superconducting electric maglev systems, which rely on powerful magnetic fields to lift and propel vehicles without physical contact with the track.
The team behind the project has spent more than a decade developing the underlying technologies, overcoming multiple engineering challenges along the way. These included ultra-fast electromagnetic propulsion, precise electric suspension and guidance systems, transient high-power energy storage inverters, and the development of high-field superconducting magnets capable of sustaining intense operational demands.
Experts say the successful test highlights China’s growing leadership in advanced rail and transportation technologies, with potential implications for future ultra-high-speed travel, scientific research platforms, and next-generation logistics systems. While the current setup remains experimental, the results suggest that even faster and more efficient maglev systems could become viable in the years ahead.
