Perry, the miniature donkey said to have inspired the beloved Donkey character in the Shrek franchise, has passed away at the age of 30. Perry, born in New York City in 1994, became a Hollywood icon when he was chosen as a model for the animated character, which was voiced by Eddie Murphy in the 2001 film and its sequels.
The donkey’s resemblance to the animated character was unmistakable, particularly his energetic trot and expressive head movements. Perry’s lead handler, Jenny Kiratli, had previously stated in 2021 that watching the movie, one could see Perry in Donkey, adding, “It’s amazing how much of our donkey is in Donkey.”
Perry’s modeling for Shrek began when he was just five years old, and he was reportedly paid $75 for his contributions to the Oscar-winning animated film. His charm, charisma, and gentle nature made him an essential part of the Barron Park Donkeys community, where he spent his final years after being adopted.
The Barron Park Donkeys Instagram account shared the news of Perry’s death, describing him as a “special donkey” who captured the hearts of not only the local community but people around the world. Perry had become a beloved figure, known for his soulful eyes, amiable demeanor, and daily walks with his companions. He was a frequent guest at local events, spreading joy and love wherever he went.
Unfortunately, Perry had been suffering from laminitis, an incurable condition that affects the hooves of donkeys and other hooved animals. Despite the ailment, Perry was surrounded by the love of his handlers in his final weeks, receiving constant care and affection.
Perry’s legacy lives on, not only as the inspiration behind one of the most iconic animated characters but also as a symbol of the deep connections animals can create with people. His handlers noted that his contributions to Shrek and the joy he spread during his life will never be forgotten.
Plans for a memorial to honor Perry’s life will be announced soon. As fans of Shrek prepare for the release of Shrek 5 in 2026, Perry’s influence on the franchise will undoubtedly remain a cherished part of the beloved story.
