A senior member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has disclosed that Sajith Premadasa is now backing the Rajapaksas, who were previously abandoned by former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. This revelation comes amid mounting tensions within the SJB, as the party grapples with the implications of this unexpected alliance.
According to the source, a clandestine meeting, facilitated by a well-known media figure and a Western Province MP with ties to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has cemented this new political dynamic. This meeting has exacerbated the existing crisis within the SJB, with party loyalists concerned about the Rajapaksas’ increasing influence and the potential loss of support from both the UNP and SJB.
Further complicating matters, the reported agreement between Premadasa and the Rajapaksas is seen as part of a longstanding relationship, with historical ties dating back to when Premadasa’s sister was reportedly saved from arrest by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. This renewed alliance raises questions about the depth of the connection between the Premadasas and Rajapaksas.
As the situation unfolds, a faction of SJB MPs is pushing for clarity on Premadasa’s new strategy, but it appears Sajith Premadasa has yet to schedule a meeting to address these concerns. The party faces an uncertain future as it navigates this controversial and potentially divisive development.
