Top Scientists Call for Global Ban on Synthetic ‘Mirror Life’

Leading scientists from around the world have launched an urgent international campaign to halt the creation of synthetic “mirror life” — a form of engineered bacteria that experts fear could pose a catastrophic threat to life on Earth.

The alarm was sounded at a landmark gathering held at the historic Pasteur Institute in Paris, where researchers warned that advances in synthetic biology — particularly the creation of microbes with reversed molecular structures — could unleash organisms capable of evading immune responses and disrupting entire ecosystems.

The concerns, first reported by the Financial Times, highlight the growing unease within the scientific community over the rapid development of gene-editing and synthetic biology technologies.

“There is a scenario in which a future mirror organism becomes a widely pervasive invasive species and displaces and disrupts many critical ecosystems across the planet — including our own,” said Dr. David Relman, a Stanford University microbiologist and immunologist, speaking to the Financial Times on the sidelines of the conference. “We have to be concerned about the possibility of an extreme, potentially existential, threat.”

At the heart of the issue is the scientific principle of chirality — the natural occurrence of molecules in mirror-image forms, much like left and right hands. While chiral molecules share identical chemical compositions, their differing structures can have dramatically different effects in biological systems.

One infamous example is thalidomide, a drug prescribed to pregnant women in the 1950s and 60s. One chiral form eased morning sickness, while its mirror form caused severe birth defects, ultimately impacting over 10,000 children worldwide.

“This is not just science fiction,” said John Glass, a synthetic biology expert at the J. Craig Venter Institute in California. “With advances in mirror biomolecule production and synthetic cell manufacturing, it could be possible within 10 to 30 years. But the idea that we can fully contain such organisms is a myth. One failure could have unprecedented consequences.”

Calls for caution have grown more urgent. In December, nearly 40 top scientists — including two Nobel laureates — issued a joint statement arguing that the risks of mirror life far outweigh its potential benefits, such as improved drug delivery systems. They called for an outright ban on their creation.

The Paris gathering marks the first in a planned series of high-level meetings, with follow-ups scheduled for the UK and Singapore. Delegates are reportedly engaging with the United Nations and national governments, referencing frameworks like the 2021 Tianjin Biosecurity Guidelines as potential models for international regulation.

Filippa Lentzos, an expert in science and security at King’s College London, stressed the need for global coordination. “It’s clear it’s becoming ever more pressing to address the security dimension of biology and the life sciences,” she told attendees. “The capacity to engineer life must be matched with international safeguards.”

The Financial Times also noted growing political scrutiny. In the U.S., President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order limiting “gain-of-function” research — the enhancement of pathogen potency — citing concerns over lab-origin theories of Covid-19. Meanwhile, the UK’s latest strategic defence review flagged synthetic biology as a vector for future weapons of mass destruction.

Still, not all scientists believe synthetic mirror life would be inherently apocalyptic. David Bikard, head of synthetic biology at the Pasteur Institute, suggested that mirror organisms may have once existed in the distant evolutionary past. “One side won, and the other never came back,” he said. “But that’s no reason for reassurance. The unknowns are large — and the risks are real.”

As synthetic biology pushes the boundaries of what is possible, the global scientific community appears united on one point: mirror life may be technically feasible, but its consequences are far from predictable. The race to regulate has begun — before science outpaces safety.
