Billionaire Gautam Adani is preparing to launch one of India’s most ambitious clean energy projects — a multi-billion-dollar battery energy storage system in western India — as part of his group’s broader strategy to dominate the renewable power sector. According to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter, the facility is slated for completion by March 2026 and is expected to be India’s largest battery storage installation and among the biggest globally.
The project will be located in Khavda, Gujarat, where the Adani Group is already developing an expansive renewable energy complex spanning thousands of acres. The group’s long-term goal, Bloomberg reported, is to expand storage capacity to as much as 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) within the next five years, signaling a decisive shift toward large-scale energy storage to complement solar and wind generation.
Battery energy storage is emerging as a crucial component of modern electricity grids, helping to stabilize systems that increasingly rely on intermittent renewable sources. As India pushes toward its national target of reaching 500 gigawatts of clean energy capacity by 2030, such storage projects will be vital. BloombergNEF data indicates that India’s total power capacity is expected to reach about 800 megawatts this year, underscoring the urgency of scaling up energy storage to meet growing demand and ensure grid reliability.
While Adani Group representatives have not yet commented on the project, Bloomberg noted that the conglomerate is in active discussions with several international technology firms to support the development. The group’s growing interest in advanced battery technology is consistent with earlier reports from August, when Bloomberg News revealed that Adani was exploring a partnership with Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD Co. for battery manufacturing ventures.
The Khavda project marks another milestone in Adani’s aggressive renewable energy expansion, which includes massive investments in solar and wind power infrastructure. If completed as planned, the new facility will not only reinforce India’s renewable energy ambitions but also position the country as a global player in large-scale energy storage innovation.
