Colombo, Sri Lanka – China has reaffirmed its commitment to respecting Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, signaling readiness to work with whoever assumes the presidency following the upcoming elections. During a special press briefing held at Colombo Port City yesterday, Minister Counsellor Zhu Yanwei of the Chinese Embassy in Colombo emphasized China’s non-interference policy, stating that the country is eager to cooperate with the new president.
“We do not interfere in any country’s sovereignty or integrity. Whoever comes to power after the next presidential elections in Sri Lanka, China stands ready to work with the new president,” Zhu said. His remarks came during the introduction of the Spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee.
Addressing questions posed by Sri Lanka Guardian about tensions in the South China Sea and the situation concerning Taiwan, Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong praised Sri Lanka’s longstanding support for the One China policy. “Sri Lanka’s adherence to the One China policy is always commendable. It reflects the spirit of genuine friendship,” Ambassador Zhenhong noted. He also reiterated China’s firm stance on protecting its sovereignty, adding, “Certain attempts are being made to undermine China’s sovereignty, but we would never tolerate such motives.”
The press briefing also featured updates on major Chinese-led projects in Sri Lanka. Colombo Port City Project Manager provided insights into the development progress, while the Hambantota Port Project Manager highlighted the port’s remarkable growth despite what he described as “biased narratives” in certain foreign media outlets.
