Cyber fraud in India has escalated at an unprecedented pace, with government data showing that more than 80 percent of the total financial losses recorded since 2020 occurred in just the past two years.

According to government data cited by sources, Indians lost a total of Indian rupees (Rs) 55,659.81 crore to cyber fraud between 2020 and 2025. Of that amount, Rs 45,344.16 crore was siphoned off during 2024 and 2025 alone, accounting for the overwhelming majority of losses reported over the six-year period, sources said.
