Planet Labs PBC plans to launch a new constellation of Earth observation satellites capable of capturing higher-resolution, AI-analyzed images within an hour, according to Bloomberg. The move aims to expand the company’s ability to deliver near real-time intelligence for commercial, environmental, and defense applications amid rising global demand for satellite data.
The forthcoming satellites, known as Owl, will join Planet Labs’ existing fleet of about 150 orbiting spacecraft that monitor a wide range of activity — from the aftermath of natural disasters to the movements of ships and aircraft. Each Owl satellite will be equipped with Nvidia Corp. chips, allowing for onboard artificial intelligence processing to identify objects and detect events more rapidly. The company said this will help customers make time-critical decisions related to disaster relief, intelligence gathering, and military operations.
Planet Labs Chief Executive Officer Will Marshall said in an interview that the company intends to build and deploy roughly 40 Owl satellites over the next several years, with a test launch expected by the end of 2026. “Looking at the nature of modern war situations from Israel in the Middle East to Ukraine, people have seen that satellites and drones are critical to information advantage, which in turn is critical to their security,” Marshall said.
The San Francisco-based company is experiencing a surge in contracts, revenues, and share price, driven by geopolitical tensions and growing interest in space-based monitoring. Its stock has more than tripled so far this year. Bloomberg noted that European nations, in particular, are fueling demand as they seek to reduce dependence on the United States for military space capabilities. Europe has increased defense spending while Washington signals a gradual pullback.
Planet Labs has signed agreements with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Germany, and Wales this year, and plans to build a manufacturing plant in Berlin to support its expanding operations. The new Owl satellites are expected to deliver one-meter resolution imagery, providing customers with sharper and faster insights than before.
Other companies in the satellite imaging sector are also moving to stay competitive. Colorado-based Vantor, formerly known as Maxar Intelligence, recently introduced a software platform that integrates satellite images with third-party data to produce detailed geospatial analyses of locations around the world. As the space-based intelligence race accelerates, Bloomberg reported that Planet Labs’ latest technological leap signals a new era of AI-driven Earth observation.
