The UK Ministry of Defence has successfully tested a high-power microwave weapon capable of disabling entire swarms of drones, according to a report in the Financial Times. The system, dubbed “RapidDestroyer,” is designed to neutralise small, fast, and numerous aerial threats that have become increasingly common in modern conflicts, including the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Developed by a consortium led by French defence giant Thales, RapidDestroyer emits a powerful radio frequency that can fry the electronics of drones from a distance. In recent trials, the weapon effectively brought down two swarms of eight drones, with more than 100 drones tracked and neutralised across multiple exercises.
“This is an important milestone in our efforts to build a robust defence against the rising threat of autonomous and semi-autonomous aerial systems,” a senior UK defence official said.
While still in its developmental phase, RapidDestroyer currently operates from the back of a flatbed truck and requires substantial power to function. However, experts are hailing the system’s potential to revolutionise battlefield defence by offering a low-cost, wide-area countermeasure capable of targeting multiple drones at once — a crucial advantage when dealing with swarm tactics.
Drone warfare has played a pivotal role in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, with unmanned systems accounting for up to 80% of combat casualties, according to Roman Kostenko, head of Ukraine’s parliamentary defence and intelligence committee. The sheer volume and affordability of small drones have made traditional, single-target countermeasures both ineffective and costly.
Microwave-based weapons like RapidDestroyer could offer a more scalable response. “High-powered microwave systems are potentially a very effective tool for defence against large numbers of drones and even cruise missiles,” said Justin Bronk of the Royal United Services Institute in London. “For certain environments, like forward operating bases or warships at sea, these systems can significantly boost defence capabilities.”
However, experts caution that these weapons aren’t a catch-all solution. Their wide-area energy beam is less suitable for protecting sensitive civilian infrastructure such as airports, where unintended electronic interference could cause collateral disruption. Additionally, adversaries may develop shielding techniques, including protective materials that insulate drone circuitry from electromagnetic pulses.
The UK’s trials come as part of a broader global push into microwave defence. The U.S. military has developed its own systems, including the Tactical High-power Operational Responder (THOR), roughly the size of a shipping container, and the Leonidas system, developed by U.S. tech company Epirus for naval use. The U.S. Navy also plans to test a system called Project Meteor in 2026, aimed at intercepting fast-moving ballistic missiles with microwave energy.
The rise of electronic warfare — from jamming GPS systems on precision-guided weapons like the U.S.-supplied HIMARS in Ukraine to the escalating use of drones — has created a constant game of measures and countermeasures. The RapidDestroyer is the UK’s latest entry into this evolving battlefield.
“We’re in a new age of warfare,” a senior UK military official told Financial Times. “Microwave weapons aren’t science fiction anymore — they’re quickly becoming a critical layer in modern defence strategy.”
